Frequently Asked Questions to Silberschweif - Horse Hair Jewelry

What kind of horse is the Silberschweif horse?

Good question! The Silberschweif horse is the registered P.R.E. (Pura Raza Espanola) stallion Jubiloso XLV. His father is Mahometano IX, his mother is Jubilosa IX, and he was bred by Maria Luisa Pol de Nunez of Sevilla, Spain. The stallion is owned by Marie-Christine Cammas and I am very happy to be able to express my gratitude to her for allowing me to use his picture on my website.

Can I send you hair from my own horse?
Yes, please! That is what makes my jewelry so special. Please be sure to follow the directions for harvesting horse hair found under the link Tail Hair.

My horse's tail is very thin. Can I send mane hair?
The tail hair is much stronger and sturdier than mane hair. That is why it is so much better for creating horse hair jewelry. I can use mane hair in exceptional cases, provided it is long and strong enough.

How does the bayonette clasp work?
The bayonette clasp is a very secure and simple closure. It is made up of two parts. The one part is a small tube with an even smaller pin, which is positioned inside the tube. This is visible from the outside as a tiny dot on the side of the tube. The pin is connected to a tiny steel spring. The second part of the clasp has a small recess like a little pathway in the end of its tube which allows the pin of the first part to be slid into the second part and to be arrested thanks to the spring.

In order to close the clasp with one hand, you can press the part of the clasp with the tiny dot on the end of the tube under a table edge or against your own knee while grasping the second part of the clasp with the other hand, turning the half of the clasp in the hand until the tiny dot lines up with the recess, pressing the two tube ends together and allowing the spring to catch in the lock. A small tug can reasure you that the clasp is actually closed.

Opening the clasp is done in the opposite direction as closing it was accomplished. After a few practice tries, you can even do it in the dark.

How should I care for my horse hair jewelry?
Horse hair is very sturdy and should last for a long time with minimal care. The jewelry can be washed with a mild (baby) shampoo.

You should not wear horse hair jewelry next to a watch or other jewelry, since sharp edges could possibly damage the horse hair jewelry and cause unnecessary wear and tear.

It is also advisable to remove horse hair jewelry before going swimming or showering, since chemicals could cause the horse hair to dry out and become damaged. It is also a good idea to remove horse hair jewelry before doing yardwork or other hard labour. Please protect your horse hair jewelry carefully in a jewelry case or other protective enclosure when not wearing it for an extended period of time to avoid damage due to insects or moths.

Can I really trust the adhesive in my horse hair jewelry?
Yes, the adhesive is very trustworthy. I use a special adhesive that is capable of binding metal and hair permanently. The adhesive is resistant to oil, petrochemicals, heat and cold. Also, the ends of the plaits are sewn and wrapped in addition to the adhesive treatment. In the unlikely event that the adhesive should be torn assunder by accident, the plait should still remain whole and I can offer you a renewed adhesive treatment as a special free service.
